Over the past few weeks, the Supreme Court hearings on President Obama’s health care reform has dominated the headlines. The case is the big news, of course, with the legal and political implications are huge. In the meantime, the economic consequences of the health care debate has been largely pushed to the sidelines. In the long run, though, they may prove to be the most important part of the story.

The purpose of the President’s plan is to extend health care coverage for more than 10 years to 95% of the nonelderly population, law, compared with about 83% today. More than 32 million people would gain coverage. The total cost is more than the Decade would be $ 1.4 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Slightly more than half of it will be paid by various taxes, fees, penalties and other fees. The rest is supposed to come from 732 billion in savings to federal health programs, partly by reducing the number of Government pay for treatments that are covered by Medicare and Medicaid.
